April 1st makes it 183 days until most Louisiana hunters can legally sling an arrow at a deer, and if you hunt in Areas 3 or 8, it’s closer than that! If you’re like me, then you’re passing the time with honey-do’s and vacations, but I also fi nd time to sneak in a thunderchicken hunt. I enjoy hunting turkeys for two reasons: 1) it gets me out of the house for a few hours, and 2) because I can scout out stand locations for bow season.
In this month’s “Words with Warren,” Mr. Womack discusses what he looks for during his long walks searching for ole Tom Turkey. If you haven’t fi gured it out yet, Warren is a living, breathing hunting encyclopedia! While he’ll be the fi rst to tell you that he doesn’t know it all, I’ll quickly follow it up with, “He knows more than most.” His monthly contribution to BBM is what I personally look forward to the most. We give him free range of topics and his submissions are spot on.
Jason Aycock and I aired a weekly podcast on BayouBucks.com a year or so ago called “Bayou Bucks Radio,” and we pretty much picked Warren’s brain clean. If you’re ever sitting at home dreaming of diff erent hunting styles, or just longing to hear a hunting story that doesn’t involve an outfi tter, visit BayouBucks.com, click the radio icon on the left hand side of the screen, and enjoy. While Jason and I probably talk too much, Warren’s charismatic style of storytelling is so good that you’ll soon forget about the two bums talking between kills. While it may seem like a long time until deer season, once you start to hear Warren talk about hunting feed trees, “Th e Womack Rule,” and his old buddy Carrol Horn, you’ll forget that the temps are bumping 90 degrees outside.
